Excellence in Friendship – What are some keys to being a good friend?

Imam Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami (Allah have mercy on him), one of the great sufi masters, wrote in his work The Proper Manners of Companionship (Adab al-Suhba) that,

Proper companionship with one’s friends is through:

[1] Remaining constantly cheerful

[2] Doing the good

[3] Spreading mention of their virtues

[4] Concealing their errors

[5] Considering great this little acts of good

[6] Considering little anything one does for them

[7] Taking care of them with one’s person and wealth

[8] Avoiding malice, envy, harming, hurting, and all matters
that they dislike, in any way

[9] Leaving anything one would have to apologize for.

Bismillah.

Assalamu alaikum.

This is an amazing story told by Sayyidi Shaykh Muhammad bin Yahya al-Ninowy (may Allah preserve and elevate him) of a great scholar of Islam, Bishr al-Hafi (may Allah be well pleased with him) when he gave up a life of corruption at the hands of Imam Musa al-Kadhim (may Allah be well pleased with him), the son of the great Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (may Allah be well pleased with him).

The Proper Approach to Debating – Imam Zaid Shakir quoting Imam Shafi`i

•May 22, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Bismillah.

Assalamu alaikum.

Imam Shafi’i is related to have said: “Never do I debate a man with a desire to hear him err in his speech, or to expose the flaws in his argument, and thus vanquish him. Whenever I face an opponent in debate I silently supplicate, ‘O Lord, help him so that truth may manifest itself in his heart and on his tongue. If it be that the truth is on my side, may he follow me; and if the truth be on his side, may I follow him.’”

Bismillah,

Assalamu alaikum,

Al-Bayhaqī narrated with his chain up to Sa‘īd b. al-Musayyib who said:

“We entered the graveyard of Madīna with ‘Alī–may Allah be pleased with him– and he called out: ‘Oh inhabitants of the graves! Peace be upon you all and the mercy of Allah! Shall you inform us of your news or shall we inform you of our news?’ [Sa‘īd] said: ‘We heard a voice call out: ‘And upon you be the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah oh leader of the believers! Inform us of what has happened after us.’ ‘Alī said: ‘As for your wives, they have all remarried. As for your wealth, it has all been divided. Your children are now gathered in the ranks of the orphans, and the dwellings you built are now all inhabited by your enemies. This is the news that we have, so what news do you have?’ One of the deceased replied: ‘The burial shrouds have all but torn to shreds, our hair has fallen out and dispersed, and our flesh has decomposed. Our eyeballs have withered down our cheeks and the worms have deposited their pus and fecal matter. What we sent forth, we have found, and what we left behind, we have lost; we are now responsible.”‘
